Scott, I wanted to send you a few mental notes I had from the game on Thursday. I think that we know where the weakness is in the group. I thought for the most part, the boys all played fairly well. There were some mental mistakes that I saw that we should probably cover at the next practice. Things like, when on base, not to run on a pop-fly unless the ball hits the ground or knowing where the runners are so if you field the ball you know where the play is. I only saw these things a couple of times, so it didnt seem like a big problem. One of the things that I saw that bugged me was when there was a hit up the third base line. Caden tried to make a play on the ball, but it bounced over to the fence. When he picked it up, instead of throwing it over to Ben for an out, he held the ball and tried to run it over. Obviously, the runner was able to advance safely. This was the same kind of under-hand toss that we worked on with second base plays. I was also a little bu
gged by a couple of the players watching the ball roll by them without trying to stop it. These two kind of mistakes were made by the players who need the most work defensively. With that in mind, Id like to suggest that instead of batting practice, Caden and Jericho could use more defensive work. I think that we have enough strong bats to get the runs we need. What would you think of trying Caden and Jericho at catcher? I noticed too that Caleb and Ben were having some problems at bat, also I think that J.T. could use some more time with batting practice, he still seems uneasy. The other boys seemed to adjust well at the plate and there were quite a few hits. I did notice, for Alexander at least, that he could use some work with the pop-fly. I didnt see if we had issues with any of the other boys. But, those are gimme outs and I hate to see that opportunity lost because of misjudgments.
So, those are some of the things I saw.
Let me know what you think. Maybe we can work on some of this at the next practice?
